Keeping It Real: Confronting Conflict During the Holidays

, WA

The holidays are right around the corner, following a heated election season and falling in the midst of a global pandemic and historic civil rights movement. We know that nearly 50% of LGBTQ people don't feel safe going home for the holidays and this particular season is bound to be particularly stressful as we search for ways to safely gather. Also, what do you do when your uncle makes a racist comment about Black Lives Matter at Thanksgiving? How do you interact with a family member who makes their harmful thoughts about LGBTQ people known? Where do you draw the line, and stop engaging with loved ones who say and do things that hurt you or other marginalized people?

So many of us are asking ourselves these tough questions, which is why we're gathering a panel of local mental health practitioners, family life experts, and activists to simulate how to confront conflict with loved ones over racism, misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia. This discussion will also provide you with tools to provide safe-space at work and in your social circles for people who've experienced trauma or rejection from loved ones.
